Top 10 Outdoor Activities To Try In Normandy

As one of the most visited regions of France, Normandy is famous for its beautiful and long beaches, for its wooded countryside (called bocage Normand in French), but also for its rich history. It is only a 2-hours drive from Paris, which makes it the perfect getaway spot for Parisians. Even though Normandy isn’t the first outdoor destination in France, you will find many unique and fun activities there.

From admiring the famous Mont Saint-Michel and the impressive tides while land sailing, to going paragliding above the historic Omaha Beach – you can find activities for everyone in Normandy.

So if you are looking to spice up your stay in Normandy, here is our list of the Top 10 Outdoor Activities to try in Normandy.

#1 : Land Sailing on the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel

The Mont Saint-Michel is THE place to visit while in Normandy. Built on a rocky island and surrounded by a huge bay, this spot is mainly constituted of the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey and its dependencies. There are only 30 permanent inhabitants!

The Mont Saint-Michel is also where you can see the biggest tides in all Europe. You will witness a 15-meter tidal range, being the difference between high tide and low tide. Due to that phenomenon, two times a day,  the Mont Saint-Michel becomes an island with water all around it. Here you will find everything you need to know about the Mont Saint-Michel and also the best times to observe the tides’ phenomenon. Stay careful when hiking on the bay with the low tide!

On top of having a beautiful view of the Mont Saint-Michel Island and Cancale (a little village known for its oysters), the Bay offers you an ideal playground for many outdoor activities. The most popular one is land sailing, also called sand yachting. Practised on the long sandy beaches, you will be driving a 3-wheeled engine, powered by a wing. Learning how to drive a land sail, is an easy task, even without prior experience. On a marked path, you will be able to discover the beaches of Normandy with a speed going up to 50 km/h.

Throughout the activity, your guide will teach you all there is to know about land sails and to answer any additional questions. For €20 per person, the Sand yachting in Mont Saint-Michel is great to try with family or friends! Kids from 12 years and up can drive their own land sail, but the younger ones must be accompanied by an adult.

#2 : Bungee Jumping from the Souleuvre Viaduct

Let’s head to Normandy’s countryside, in the Calvados, for the 2nd on our list of outdoor activities in Normandy. The Souleuvre Viaduct is a disused railway laying 60 meters above the Souleuvre river. It’s the perfect spot to try bungee jumping in the Normandy region. Since 1990, a suspended footbridge gives access to a bungee jumping platform located on one of the bridge’s pillars.

3, 2, 1… Each year, 8 000 people come from all around the world to try this unique experience. When jumping, you will be attached from your ankles, but also from your waist – for maximum security. With the river below, you can ask to adjust the length, so you get to touch the water with your hands or even be submerged until your waist. Once you’ve jumped, you will be picked up and untied at the bottom of the valley.

Before you book the bungee jumping at the Souleuvre Viaduct, make sure you take a look at the prerequisites and the contraindications. This jump from the Souleuvre Viaduct will cost you €99.

If this activity is a bit too much adrenaline for you, there are other outdoor activities to try such as the giant zipline or the giant swing for a pendulum jump. Certainly, they are quieter than a bungee jump but still full of adventure!

#3 : Catamaran Sailing at Omaha Beach

Omaha beach is one of the 5 landing beaches from June 1944. It is, without a doubt, the most famous one. There, you will find American cemeteries, the D-Day Museum, and the Memorial Museum. We suggest you combine these visits with an outdoor activity: catamaran sailing. When catamaran sailing in Omaha Beach, you will discover the historic Norman beach from the water.

Starting from Colleville-sur-Mer, your guides will tell you everything about the technique and safety tricks you must know. Unlike traditional monohull sailing boats, catamarans have 2 hulls both parallel to one another. These technicalities are the factors that make the catamaran go faster – since the hulls decrease the water resistance and increase the stability.

During 2 whole hours, and for €30 per person, you will defy the wind and waves with family and/or friends. Coming out of this experience, you will know all there is to know about sailing a catamaran on this mythical landing beach.

    #4: Paragliding at Omaha Beach

Let’s continue our list of the 10 outdoor activities in Normandy, with another one on Omaha Beach. As you’ve read before, this beach is very popular and offers incredible views of the English Channel. So why not discover these places from above? Accompanied by your guide, all you will have to do is take some energetic steps towards the cliff, then sit back on your seat and enjoy the view.

On the tandem paragliding flight from Omaha Beach, you will have a short briefing session and will be able to choose between 4 different flights based on your experience. Get ready to go on an adventure you will never forget!

Depending on the weather, you will either take off from Omaha Beach, Vierville sur Mer, Commes, or Tracy sur Mer. But all these places offer beautiful landscapes of the landing beaches.

If you feel comfortable enough, and the weather is good, your guide might just let you fly the paraglide! This whole activity will cost from €70 and up.

    #5: Horseback Riding  in Normandy

Now, another fun way to discover Normandy’s territory is with the help of horses. From stables located in the regional park of the Boucles de la Seine Normande, you can go on a horseback riding excursion near Rouen, Le Havre, and more. For 4 hours, you will learn the basics of horse riding and will discover the Norman paths along the Seine.

From €40, anyone can ride these horses, which makes this activity perfect to try with family or friends. During the horseback riding tours in Normandy,  you will meet your instructor at the stables, be introduced to your horse, and learn about their equipment and how to put them on.  Then, you will groom them and get ready for your 90 minutes (minimum) ride in the heart of the forest – where you will learn how to walk and trot with the horses.

But for those of you who are fond of horses, you can try our different horseback riding activities in Normandy and go on rides for up to 5 days!

#6: Microlight Flight in Etretat near DeauvilleThe Normandy coast is known for its impressive chalk cliffs which are stunningly vertical, especially those of Etretat. The most classic way to discover this unique landscape is to go for a walk by the sea or on the paths overlooking the English Channel.

But we suggest you discover the cliffs of Etretat and the beaches of the region, from above, while on a pendulum microlight flight. But what is a microlight? Good question! A microlight is an ultralight aircraft equipped with an engine. It is in fact a motorized hang glider.

The departure to fly over the cliffs of Etretat by microlight is from the airport of Le Havre-Octeville. You can choose between four different flights:

Discovery flight: during 12 minutes you will fly over the ocean and the coast towards Cauville or over the beach of Le Havre

20 minutes flight: you will fly along the famous Alabaster coast to the port of Antifer while enjoying the sun setting on the cliffs

25-30 minutes flight: either you can fly over the Normandy coast until the vertical of the Phare de la Poterie, or you can fly over the Pont de Normandie

Flight to Etretat-Yport: during 45-50 minutes, you will fly first to Etretat where you will find its majestic cliffs and then discover the windmills of Fécamp.

No matter which itinerary you choose and from €99, a microlight flight is always an unforgettable experience, especially if you fly over the beautiful beaches and impressive cliffs of Normandy.

#7 : Sea Kayaking tour in Trouville

Let’s stay close to the beautiful Normandy cliffs. Another unique way to discover the beautiful Normandy coast is by kayak. From the sea, you will be able to see the cliffs from below, which makes them seem even more impressive!

Sea kayaking along the cliffs of Normandy, starting from the seaside resort of Trouville, is an activity accessible to all. The only prerequisite is that participants should know how to swim at least 25 meters without assistance. This must be confirmed by a certificate. For about two hours, you will paddle by the majestic cliffs and pass by the most beautiful beaches of Normandy. This activity is ideal for families and friends.

Children under 15 years must be accompanied by an adult and children under 18 years need parental permission. This unique and fun adventure costs from €20 per person and children under 9 years old can participate for free.

    #8 Via Ferrata in Clécy

Clécy is the perfect spot to try a Via Ferrata due to its environment. This is why the Via Ferrata near Clécy is one of the Top 10 Via Ferratas in France. This activity is a mix of hiking and climbing and is done on a route built on the cliffs overhanging Clécy. The Via Ferrata is equipped with cables, zip lines, ladders, and ramps to facilitate the progression throughout the course.

The Via Ferrata of Clécy is ideal to do with family and friends. Its course, 250 meters long and 70 meters high, follows the cliffs along the Orne river. Your efforts will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the region and the Orne viaduct. For your adventure on the Via Ferrata of Clécy, you can either be supervised by a qualified instructor or cross the course in an autonomous way with a small training of the safety techniques before you go.

In both cases and from €17 and up, you will have a good time during which you will face a succession of monkey bridges, footbridges, and beams along the cliff. Fun fact: during the summer you can finish the Via Ferrata with a giant zipline!

    #9: Skydiving near Etretat

If a view of the famous Normandy cliffs from the air in a microlight (see activity #6) doesn’t seem spectacular enough, we have a solution. How about a view of the area from over 3000 meters, does that seem high enough? Perfect then, get ready for an unforgettable tandem skydive over the Normandy coast!

From €335, you will leave from le Havre-Octeville airport, where you will receive a video briefing and a rehearsal of the jump on the ground before boarding the plane. Then, you will take off and see a  magnificent view of the beaches of Deauville, Trouville, Honfleur, as well as the cliffs of Etretat. Once you have reached the height of 3300 meters, you can start the free fall at a speed of 200 km/h.

Your instructor takes care of everything, you just have to enjoy the adrenaline rush and the view! After 35 to 40 seconds, at about 1500 meters above ground, the instructor will deploy the parachute and for around 5 minutes, you will be able to admire the superb landscapes: from land to sea. This is also the moment to realize the adrenaline-filled experience you just had!

#10: Fat biking at Omaha Beach

Fat biking is definitely worthy of being on our list of the 10 outdoor activities in Normandy, especially since it is also located on Omaha Beach.  It is a bike made for riding on unstable roads like sand, snow, and mud. The only difference with a classic bike is that the tires are bigger – which allows you to move easier. You can ride a Fat bike no matter the weather!

From €20 per person, thanks to the Fatbike excursion on Omaha Beach, you will be able to ride on the sand of the Normandy landing beaches for an educational and fun outing. With your family or friends, you can either do a 1h30 session without guidance or a tour ride on an electric Fat Bike to discover the secrets of the Second World War.

Living unique adventures and creating new memories is the best way to discover a region. By now you should have enough ideas for your stay in Normandy! And if none of the 10 ideas above have made you want to try them, rest assured, Normandy has plenty of other activities to offer. We invite you to consult all our activities in Normandy.

Paraglides flying above the Annecy Lake

    Is Tandem paragliding dangerous?

Some may say paragliding is a “risky sport”, but it is not dangerous. Everything is in place for you to have a good time in complete safety with state-qualified instructors. Flying with a certified school from the French Federation of Free Flight, like ours, is a good guarantee of safety.

In what weather conditions do we not fly?

We can’t fly when it’s raining, when it’s too windy, or if the wind is not properly oriented for take-off. These three factors aside, the sky is our playground!

I am afraid of heights, so I can’t try tandem paragliding?

On the contrary! In short, vertigo is created by the brain when it receives contradictory information from the eyes, the feet, and the inner ear. During your first flight, your feet do not touch the ground, so there is no vertigo in paragliding and no unpleasant sensation.

Do you have to be athletic to take a paragliding experience?

You don’t have to be a great sportsman! However, you must be able to take a few strides at take-off to get some speed and fly away.

How long does it take to do a paragliding ride in Annecy?

There are several types of paragliding lessons and their time can vary from 10 to 15 minutes to more than 45 minutes! It depends on your wishes.

What are the different tandem paragliding rides in Annecy?

Flyeo offers you the following morning flights: children (from 3 to 12 years old) and discovery (12 years old and more) which last about 15 minutes. And in the afternoon: ascension flights (25/30 min) or prestige flights (45 min). For the most courageous, there is also the sensation of flight, which will make you ride the wind like you never have before!

How many people can fly at the same time?

Under the same glider, there is only you and your pilot. But if you want to fly in a group and at the same time, we can have you take off a few minutes apart from your friends to be in the air together.

    Minimum age? Maximum age?

The reference age for the youngest is 3 years old. And as long as the desire to discover the sky is there, no age limit!

    What is the maximum weight?

This will depend on the type of flight you want to do, but in general: for the morning, it is 80 kg maximum and 110 kg in the afternoon. What clothes and shoes should I wear for a paragliding experience?

We advise you to wear trainers that you are comfortable running in. And for the clothes, it will depend on the weather, but even if it is nice and warm on the ground, it is better to wear a jacket during the flight, as there is always some wind.

    Where is the meeting point?

It is at our school next to the Doussard landing spot. There is no need to go up alone to the take-off zone, as our shuttle will take you there with the other passengers.

Do not take your personal belongings with you during the flight (do not leave your car keys in your pockets, for example!). You can leave your belongings at the reception. You can take a GoPro or your camera with you, only if it is attached to yourself. We do not allow attachments on helmets. We do not accept any responsibility for lost or broken items during the flight. In any case, your pilot will film and take pictures of you with his GoPro. How does the take-off take place during a paragliding experience?

Do you have to jump into the void?

To take off, we simply glide through the air. You don’t have to jump, because your harness will directly hold you after you left the ground.

    3, 2, 1… Lets take-off!

What is the position during the flight?

You will sit comfortably in a harness, the same way you would sit on your sofa!

What are the emotions you will be feeling during the flight?

They can be different for everyone, but all passengers agree on the feeling of freedom and wonder. For those with motion sickness, don’t hesitate to ask your pharmacist for advice.

Can I take my camera, GoPro or mobile phone with me during the flight?

Do not take your personal belongings with you during the flight (do not leave your car keys in your pockets, for example!). You can leave your belongings at the reception. You can take a GoPro or your camera with you, only if it is attached to yourself. We do not allow attachments on helmets. We do not accept any responsibility for lost or broken items during the flight. In any case, your pilot will film and take pictures of you with his GoPro. He knows all the best angles, and you can enjoy your flight hands free!

What you need to know for the landing Paragliding landing in Annecy

    Is the landing dangerous?

Not at all, the pilot and passenger land gently on their feet, unlike skydiving where the landing can be more brutal. We recommend good trainers as the grassy ground can be slippery during the landing.

Where is the landing point in Annecy?

The official landing spot is the one in Doussard, where paragliders and hang gliders come to land. Our school is located right next to it!

And to finish, here is a little bonus question:

What is the longest you can stay in the air with a paraglider?

For hours and hours if the weather conditions allow it and if the pilot has the necessary stamina. Some people have flown more than 11 hours in a row! Records for distance and time are usually set in Brazil, where the days are long and the aerological conditions optimal.

All You Need To Know Before Tandem Paragliding In Annecy

Paragliding makes us dream and there is a certain mystery that surrounds this activity. Annecy and its lake offer an exceptional setting for a first tandem flight, during which you will discover the impressive view and will experience new sensations. A tandem paragliding experience in Annecy allows you to feel free and to fly like a bird!

To offer you a unique and stress-free experience, our long-time partner FLYEO, a paragliding school in Annecy, has gathered the most frequently asked questions (FAQ) about the flight, the organization, or the weather. Read their recommendations and get ready to take off!

    Who are the paragliding pilots?

Your instructor is the main pilot, and all of them are state-certified instructors. For the most courageous, you can also ask to lead the paraglider! For a moment, you will take the controls and feel the movements of the sail above you.

Indeed, in the afternoon the conditions are generally stronger at takeoff and need much less running, this facilitates this phase for the pilot who can then bring bigger or heavier people.

How to prepare for a paragliding experience?

With a smile and a good mood! Simply take your sunglasses, sneakers, and a small jacket, and you are ready to fly.

Is it available for people with a disability?

This will depend on the disability, so don’t hesitate to contact us.  For a person with reduced mobility (in a wheelchair, for example), there are wheelchair harnesses to get you off the ground. Normally these flights are only available in the afternoon. In our experience, the maximum weight for taking off easily is 80 kg. Our team is here to advise you on a solution that is adapted to your needs.

Can I have a female instructor?

Yes, our female instructor is Barbara, aka Barbie! Like all our instructors, she will be happy to share her passion with you.

    When can I not paraglide?

People with heart failure, epileptics, sprains, plaster casts, and some other special cases such as pregnancy. If you have any doubts, do not hesitate to contact us.

Helicopter Skydiving or Airplane Skydiving – What to go for?

Everyone knows that Tandem Skydiving is the ultimate bucket list item! But did you know that there are two types of aircraft that you can jump from? Helicopter skydiving and airplane skydiving!

Most skydiving centres (or dropzones) around the world jump from airplanes – this is because airplanes are more efficient to fly. But there are some areas (like Interlaken, Switzerland or Christchurch, New Zealand) that you have the option to skydive from a helicopter – which can change your experience significantly!

So what’s the difference between helicopter skydiving and airplane skydiving, you ask? In this article, we asked Laura from Skydive Interlaken to explain the differences between skydiving from an airplane vs helicopter.

    Are the sensations different?

Yes! The sensations of helicopter skydiving and airplane skydiving are different during the exit. Here’s why.

An airplane can’t stand still in the air and always has to be flying forward. Once it gets to the right height for skydivers to exit, it slows down as much as it can to about 160km/h. As soon as the door opens you will feel a strong rush of cool air – just think about when you open your car window on the freeway. When you’re sitting at the door of the plane ready to exit, the strong wind is pushing on your body and as you fall off, you always feel like you’re being “supported” by this wind.

A helicopter on the other hand can hover, and there are a couple of benefits to this. One is that when the door opens, there’s no wind rushing into the cabin, and the other is that there’s no time pressure on the exit (because you’re always hovering over the dropzone). This means there is no rush on the exit, and you may even stand very relaxed on the outside of the helicopter with your instructor, looking around at your surroundings. When it’s time to fall off, you get an incredibly calming feeling until a few seconds later you feel the rush of air from below like you’re floating on a bubble.

Is Helicopter Skydiving safer than Airplane Skydiving?

Although Tandem Skydiving sounds dangerous, these days it is extremely safe – according to the National Safety Council, an individual is more likely to die by a lightning strike or being stung by a bee!

Nevertheless, both skydiving from a helicopter and out of an airplane have their dangers – just like anything in life! But one is not safer than the other. The skydiving equipment used is the same, it’s just the aircraft that’s different. Nowadays, most countries have very strict regulations on skydiving, whether it’s out of an airplane or helicopter.

Where can I skydive out of a helicopter, and where out of an airplane?

Skydiving out of an airplane is easy to find as this is what most skydiving centres around the world offer. However, there are a few places around the world (like Skydive Interlaken) that offer daily helicopter skydives.

    What about the price?

Helicopter skydiving is generally more expensive than airplane skydiving as it’s more expensive to run a helicopter.

What to go for in Interlaken?

Interlaken is a town situated between two glacial lakes and on the edge of the Swiss Alps, so if you want to get up close and personal to the Alps then definitely go for the helicopter as it can hover close to the mountains, and has a huge 360-degree view out of its huge windows. As described above, the exit is also very different – in the helicopter, you’ll be able to stand outside on the skit before exiting, which is a pretty cool experience.

If you don’t care so much about the scenic flight and are more worried about price – then the airplane could be the right choice for you. The skydiving part will feel the same, but the exit and view will be different. The view of the Alps is still beautiful, but you might not be able to see as much because the windows of a plane are much smaller. But if you’re on a budget, and want to experience the beauty of skydiving in the Alps then this could be a great option!

    And what will you choose?

So, you might be wondering, is it better to jump from an airplane or helicopter?

Well, depending on your personal preferences like where you’re located and your budget might play a big role in your decision. But Laura from Skydive Interlaken has done both and would always recommend the helicopter! She says:

“Helicopter skydiving in the Swiss Alps is such a unique, special experience, and there are not many places in the world where you can do it. Getting up close and personal with mountains and waterfalls during the scenic flight before the jump makes the experience even more phenomenal! Although it’s a little more pricey – it’s an experience of a lifetime and totally worth it if you can make it to Switzerland”

Whether you go for the helicopter skydive in Interlaken or for a more classic airplane skydive somewhere on this globe, one thing is for sure: it will be an unforgettable experience full of adrenaline! To help you get ready for this adventure, read everything you need to know about tandem skydiving.

A big thank you to Laura from Skydive Interlaken for answering our questions and explaining the difference between helicopter skydiving and airplane skydiving. The Skydive Interlaken team is waiting for you with open arms for your tandem skydive experience in Interlaken.

Flyboarding – The New Extreme Sport?

Just when you think extreme sports cannot get any crazier or more exciting along comes another one – This one however does not involve falling from extreme heights or flying around in special suits, but allows the athlete to frolic and perform crazy stunts in the water! Welcome to Flyboarding!

While called Flyboard, the ingenious invention is not technically aboard, but a simple device made up of a long hose connected to a pair of jet boots and two hand held stabilizers. To get going, the user simply straps on the jet boots and attaches the other end of the hose to the motor of a powerful Jet Ski. As the Jet Ski starts up, the robust stream of water it creates is channeled into the long hose, which in turn, propels the human at the other end high up into the sky and allows him/her to perform a variety of maneuvers like flips and spins. The two hand-held stabilizers help keep the flyer in control of the flight at all times.

As the water drains out, the Flyboard and the attached human leap back into the water – headfirst, only to rise again with the next powerful stream of water. While it looks and sounds dangerous, the manufacturer maintains that it is very intuitive and that once the user gets the hang of it, he/she can fly as high as 30ft. and even, perform backward somersaults.

Invented by French Jet Ski Racing champion Frank Zapata, just a year ago, Flyboarding has resonated with fans so rapidly that on October 19th and 20th, 50 eager Flyboarders from 21 countries arrived in Doha, Qatar to compete in the first World Championships.

After an intense first day of competition, only 32 were allowed into the second round, a group that was further whittled down to the top 16, then 8 and then, the final three. While all were good, it was French Freestyler Stephane Prayas that impressed the judges the most with his superb technical skills. Sweden’s Peter Berglund came in second followed by Trey Andrews from the USA.

The highlight of the event was when Frank Zapata, the creator of this crazy machine showcased his astounding Flyboarding skills in the midst of an aquatic light show. The cheers and the enthusiasm of the crowd made it quite apparent that the next new extreme sport had indeed arrived!

In case you are thinking of putting the Flyboard on your Christmas list, you should be warned that it does cost $6,700 USD and, the Jet Ski is not included!
